It's the time of year to smell that delicious, warm gingerbread smell! Don't you just love how it can fill your house? We just recently ended our gingerbread unit! I love teaching in themes with great literature and I couldn't wait to share this theme and learning activities with you!
Literature & Writing
We began our theme unit with one of our favorite books for December, Jan Brett's The Gingerbread Baby, a fun spin off the origional gingerbread man tale. In the story, there are a number of events which transpire and so I also chose to work on doing a five-finger retell of the story verbally and through writing. After reading the story, two different times during the week, Roo and I used chart paper and ordinal words (first, second, third...) to retell the story through writing in only five sentences. (five fingers).
We also listed steps in making a batch of gingerbread cookies. (A condensed version). Modeling writing is a great way to teach a multitide of grammar concepts!
We really are increasing our writing lately and so in addition to the retell and the instructional language in writing a recipe, I she chose to write a short informative piece on her gingerbread girl (which she illustrated). To scaffold or help with site words, we listed them on chart paper.
For all other words, I want her to sound them out and work with the phonemes. We have one more writing to do, a fictional story about her gingerbread girl.
Of course, we also made gingerbread cookies. This was a great activity to do with Daddy when he came home! The recipe is pinned on my winter and Christmas board for your snatching (and it is the best gingerbread recipe I've ever used)!
And as always, I love to tie in a read aloud with just about anything we do! We love books and here are some suggestions for you. We absolutely cannot say enough about the Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett and The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck (a full if fun rhymes must have adventure for any preschooler!).
Do you do a gingerbread theme in December? If so, I'd love hear from you and about what you like to do with your children using gingerbread men!
