Montessori Fruit Peeling and Cutting
In this learning set up, work with your preschooler on both peeling and slicing fruit. Plus, tie in a great piece of literature featuring fruit!
What I love about the Montessori method, which I'm learning more about, is the simplicity it lends to learning. You can do montessori preschool activities in your own home. They are practical and essential for our babies.
In this learning activity, I wanted my baby to practice the everyday skill of peeling and slicing fruit. (This is a no brainer, really.) Montessori encourages us to teach our babies everyday tasks.
And she was all too eager to do this activity. Because I love literature, I tied in one of favorite stories about sharing which happens to feature fruit, "The Bear Who Shared". We also let her older sister participate and we peeled and/or sliced several kinds of fruit then enjoyed sharing as the story shows.
For our fruit, we chose bananas and she used a butter knife for slicing. Make sure to show them how to hold the knife and which part is the safe part to touch. Modeling and then forming their fingers around it properly for the first few slices, helps. This is actually something we've taught before with making banana bread. She usually slices the bananas for us. They're soft and easy to hold on to.
For peeling, we chose a small easy-peel orange. I got it started for her and she did the rest with much concentration. Now she wants to peel everyone's orange! We know doing activities with small finger movements help improve fine motor control. So, this is a great activity to try!
The girls had a lot of fun doing this learning activity. Teaching our little ones how to perform everyday household tasks can give them confidence and help them understand their role in the family is also important. I'll be featuring a couple of more Montessori style preschool learning tasks for you to try soon!
