Spring has sprung a seed study at our home and not only have we been reading tons of books about seeds, plants, stems, flowers, roots and fruits, we're making art with seeds! I know, crazy, right? Well, it turns out your little ones can have a lot of fun making art with seeds. All you need are a few things.
We used a bag of cheap bird seed we already had in our garage to do this little art project. (Sad to say, our birds here are too well fed and we weren't having any success with them being interested in our seeds.) Never fear! We were able to put some of the bird seed to good use! Enter, Art Project.
paper plates (1 or 2 for glue)
child size paint brushes
bowls or containers for seeds (1-2)
cardstock (we used green)
There are two ways we did our seed art:
1. Color a picture of a flower and use the seeds to outline the flower petals or middle.
2. Paint a picture or design using the glue and add the seeds.
Pour about a 1/2 cup worth of liquid glue onto a plate. Use the paintbrush to paint the glue onto the paper wherever you want it. Keep in mind when you paint the glue on, immediately drop the seeds in their spots. Once you have your picture complete, lift the paper and brush the loose seeds back into the container you're using. (like glitter)
*We did our art on a blanket so I could easily shake the seeds off, but they were actually pretty clingy. I would recommend doing it out side on a child's table where you can easily brush the seeds onto the ground. There were also a couple of tiny beetles in our seeds- Another reason to do it outside.
* I drew the flower for my preschooler, but yours might be ready to draw the flower himself.
This is a great activity for building fine and gross motor skills. Using the paint brush to spread the glue and then using a pinch finger formation to grasp the tiny bird seeds and place them on the glue accomplishes practice in these skills. I hope you enjoy this spring art project with your kids!
